Students in grades eight through eleven who are passionate about the principles of disaster preparedness now have a few more days to apply to join the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s next Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).

The YPC was established in 2012 by FEMA to “bring teens together from across the nation who are interested in community preparedness and looking to build leadership skills and networks that will feed their success into the future,” according to an announcement from the agency.

FEMA has extended the application deadline to Friday March 8, giving young Virgin Islanders in the aforementioned grades extra time to complete their applications. According to FEMA, members of the national YPC are expected to spearhead preparedness projects to be deployed in their communities, liaise with FEMA officials to provide a youth perspective, and to champion the concept of disaster preparedness overall.
