The Virgin Islands Cycling Federation will hold a final race of the year on Sunday, Oct. 8, in Christiansted, St. Croix. The first America’s Paradise Challenge will start and finish in front of the D.C. Canegata Ballpark at 7 a.m. and will include seven racing categories and five different distances. The top three finishers in each category will receive cash prizes totaling $15,000. The VI Cycling Federation is expecting cyclists from St. Thomas, the BVIs and other Caribbean islands to participate.
Motorists should drive with caution on Sunday morning if traveling the Southshore Road, Point Udall, East End Road, Tipperary or the Gallow’s Bay area.
The Elite Men’s group will race on a 55-mile course, which will include a trip up to the top of Point Udall. A special prize, called a prime, will be awarded to the cyclist who reaches the monument first.
The Expert category will race on a 45-mile course, which will also include the climb to Point Udall.
The Elite Women will cover 40 miles, which will include a broad lap around the east end followed by a smaller lap, passing by Tipperary.
The Sport and Masters Men groups will complete one broad lap, totaling 25 miles. Masters Women and Juniors will complete the small lap for a total of 15 miles.
