At about 7:20 a.m., police were called after a woman was shot in the 4800 block of North Ritter Street. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released.

Detectives who responded to the scene said that the woman's killing "began as a domestic violence disturbance" according to Kendale Adams, deputy chief of criminal investigations for IMPD.

The shooter fled the scene, but police got a description of both the man and his car. Soon after that information was broadcast, the car was seen driving in the 3300 block of Boulevard Place.

Adams said the driver did not pull over for officers who activated their lights and sirens, and police gave chase. At least three times during the pursuit, the driver stopped his car and fired "several" shots at officers with a rifle.

Two of the police cars were struck by gunfire, and at least one officer shot back, Adams said.

The man eventually got out of his car in the 900 block of West 32nd Street. He pointed a rifle at officers and was shot.
