UVI Clarifies Spring Tuition Increase After Students Raise Concerns About Cost, Communication
Full-time undergraduate tuition for on-campus courses at the University of the Virgin Islands will rise by about 56% in spring 2027, prompting concerns from students about both the cost and how the changes were communicated. UVI President Safiya George has acknowledged that students should have been notified sooner and said the university is working to expand scholarship support.

Students contacted the Source on Sept. 27, saying they discovered the new rates while searching board of trustees records rather than through the university’s tuition webpage.
“A tuition increase of almost 56% is something students should be clearly informed about,” they wrote. “We should not have to dig to find out how much our tuition is going to be.”
UVI provided a release in response to the Source’s request for an interview, outlining the changes, their approval history and financial assistance available to students. The university said existing per-credit rates will remain unchanged for spring 2027, while semester tuition for full-time undergraduates taking on-campus courses will increase.
