The fallout from an ongoing federal investigation into fraud and bribery involving V.I. government officials could have wide-ranging impacts on numerous criminal cases in which contractor David Whitaker assisted with police investigations.
“They have to be seriously looked at,” defense attorney Clive Rivers told The Daily News. Rivers, in a phone interview on Wednesday, said his staff are reviewing clients’ cases to see if prosecutors relied on work done by David Whitaker and the cybersecurity and digital surveillance company he founded, Mon Ethos Pro Support.
“I know we have discussed it with other criminal defense lawyers, and I think they’re doing the same thing,” Rivers said. So far, the federal investigation has determined that an agent of the V.I. Police Department accepted bribes from Whitaker, according to records unsealed in U.S. District Court last week. The documents were partially redacted and identified the agent only as “Public Official One.”
