Grenada Declares October 19 National Heroes Day

The government of Grenada has officially declared October 19 a national public holiday, commemorated as National Heroes Day, as announced in the October 7, 2024, edition of the Government Gazette. Dated October 4, the proclamation emphasizes the importance of this day for remembrance, reflection, and recognition of the nation’s progress in recovery and growth.

National Heroes Day aims to promote unity and collective advancement among the people of Grenada. The date is particularly significant, as it marks the tragic events of 1983, when Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and several others were killed at Fort George during a period of internal conflict within factions of the People’s Revolutionary Government. This observance will provide an opportunity for citizens to honor the strides made by the nation while fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.

Before 2023, National Heroes Day in Grenada was commemorated with a solemn church service at Fort George, where the tragic killings occurred, followed by the laying of wreaths by family members, friends, and supporters of the victims. In 2024, the celebrations will feature Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves as the keynote speaker, under the theme “Unity in Commemorating Our Heroes: Past, Present, and Future.” The event will take place in the form of a rally at Progressive Park in St. Andrew. During the rally, several individuals will be recognized for their contributions, although these awards will not follow the stipulations of the 2007 National Honours and Awards Act.
