Leona Bryant remembered for indelible legacy as voice, face of V.I. tourism

The radiant smile. A colorful hibiscus tucked behind her well-coiffed hair. Her signature red lipstick, gold jewelry, and enviable fashion choices. Leona Bryant was elegance personified as the face and voice of V.I. tourism.

Government House in a statement on Monday announced the passing of the former assistant director of Tourism under then Commissioner Eric Dawson. Bryant is the grandmother of current Tourism Commissioner Joe Boschulte.  Both Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach remembered Bryant fondly, as did her protégé — retired assistant tourism director, Claire Roker, as news spread on Monday of her death.

“The industry of tourism respected Leona Bryant – locally and internationally,” Roker told The Daily News of her fondest memory Monday night. “She was a woman to be reckoned with when it came to tourism. She was the pillar of tourism, and I learned a lot from her – and respect her for her guidance and ability to help me move forward.”  Bryant served as Tourism director from 1981 until her retirement in 1996. Roker served in the assistant director position from 1987, until she was promoted to director at the recommendation of Bryant.
