Review of schools' handling of misconduct reports complete, but not public

Nearly three years after Alfredo Bruce Smith was arrested for raping students at Charlotte Amalie High School, the government has still not released the results of an internal review intended to determine whether Education Department officials received complaints about Bruce but failed to act.

“I don’t know why we haven’t released the report,” Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during Monday’s press briefing. Smith, 53, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on April 26 after admitting to raping numerous victims over a 15-year period. A federal investigation led to Smith’s arrest in September 2021.

Days after Smith was arrested, Education spokeswoman Cynthia Graham said an investigation was ongoing “into allegations of the CAHS administration being made aware of the alleged abuse in 2019. If the investigation reveals that this information is correct, the appropriate action will be taken.” More than a year later, The Daily News asked again whether anyone had been held accountable for failing to report Smith to law enforcement.
