Diabetics on Jost Van Dyke received free eye screenings on April 12 during a clinic hosted by the BVI Diabetes Association in partnership with two visiting UK eye specialists.
The screenings were conducted by Dr. Nicholas Lee, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Retinal Specialist, and Ophthalmology Technician Michele Lee.
The clinic provided diabetic eye care and early detection services for residents living with diabetes. The visiting doctors brought specialized equipment to the island and carried out comprehensive eye examinations throughout the day.
This visit formed part of an ongoing series of screening events organised by the BVI Diabetes Association and the Lees. To date, more than 100 patients have been screened across the territory, with nearly 30 percent requiring follow-up care.
The 2025 screening series began in February, with clinics already held on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. In 2024, as part of World Diabetes Day activities, the Lees screened 55 patients in Road Town and West End. Nearly 30 percent of those individuals were referred for further medical care.
The Diabetes Association said the results from the clinics underscore the importance of regular eye screenings for individuals living with diabetes.
