‘Blameless inquiry’ shows Virgin Islanders must fight to protect children

Blameless inquiry.

That is the title that the Virgin Islands investigation gave to the report on the school system’s failure to protect students and children from sexual abuse. What an outrageous choice of words, to say the least. If not for the mother of a victim being dissatisfied with the lack of investigation into an assault on her child in 2019, and reporting the problem to a federal Office of Homeland Security Investigations, this disgusting lack of accountability would continue. The report went on to cite so many failures that were wrong they are almost too numerous to mention.

The amazing part about this report is the fact that people in positions of authority and mandated to report abuse don’t feel safe enough to do such reporting. Shocking! What are you afraid of? Are you afraid that a friend might get mad at you for reporting? Are you afraid that if you turn in someone who happens to be a relative, a colleague, a friend, that it will hurt their feelings? Perhaps that’s one of the reasons they know nothing would ever be done?
