BVIAA launching Green Initiative for sustainable airport operations

The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) is launching a Green Airport Initiative aimed at positioning the BVIAA as a leader in sustainable airport practices.

During his recent budget address, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley highlighted the initiative’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and fostering environmental responsibility. The Green Airport Initiative includes plans for water recycling systems, feasibility studies for solar panel installation, and the use of electric ground service equipment, Premier Wheatley explained. This initiative forms part of a broader government strategy that includes a “Public Service Green Pledge,” where departments will create implementation plans detailing their environmental actions, responsibilities, resources, and timelines.

“The BVIAA’s goal is to lead in sustainable airport operations, reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental stewardship,” Wheatley stated. The Public Service Green Pledge was initially launched by the former Conservation and Fisheries Department in June 2012, gathering pledges from over 50 businesses and government departments. Currently overseen by the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Climate Change in partnership with Green VI, the programme has set the groundwork for a Green Certification Programme for the Virgin Islands.
