BVI News understands that Customs officers recently seized more than seven pounds of marijuana while conducting mandated checks at a local shipping company.
It’s unclear whether the drugs were set to be shipped out of the BVI or whether they were part of cargo that had just arrived in the territory. However, it’s understood that the drugs were carefully packed in boxes and placed in a refrigerator.
Our news centre was told that there were a total of two boxes but the total drugs was estimated to be just over three kilos.
It’s unclear whether the authorities have information about who the drugs belonged to and whether anyone has been held in connection with the find.
But the discovery comes amid a series of incidents that the territory has been experiencing because of the transhipment of illegal drugs. Since the start of the year, the territory has seen an uptick in violent crimes, which police say are mostly linked to the cocaine trade, which continues to entice many youngsters.
