Family, friends to celebrate inaugural Alicia ‘Chucky’ Hansen Day

The territory will observe the first Alicia “Chucky” Hansen Day on Friday in honor of the late senator, revered for “keeping in touch with my people,” her signature line made famous during 11 terms in the V.I. Legislature.

Last month the 35th Legislature approved Bill 35-0416 designating Dec. 6 as a day to celebrate what was described as “the unmatched contributions of Alicia “Chucky” Hansen,” and her prowess as a perennial vote- getter.  The bill, introduced by St. Croix District Sen. Javan James, was ultimately signed into law by Gov. Albert Bryan Jr.

Alicia “Chucky” Hansen Day is not a holiday, so government workers will not have the day off. Virgin Islanders, however, are encouraged to pay homage, in their own way, to the woman who made free concerts with top entertainers a fundamental part of her campaigns. In addition to the V.I. Legislature, Hansen twice ran for Government House as No. 1 and No 2. on the ticket, respectively.
