Frederiksted residents hear from director of territory’s street naming project

Dozens of Frederiksted residents attended a recent Our Town Frederiksted meeting in the American Legion Hall to learn about the organization’s activities, particularly its partnership with the Office of the Lt. Governor to advance street addressing on St. Croix, according to an OTF news release.

Chris George, project director of the Street Addressing Initiative with the OLG, discussed the benefits of adopting a standardized addressing system, emphasizing its role in enhancing mail delivery, emergency response, public safety and road navigation.  According to George, 226 roads throughout Frederiksted are unnamed, with the majority of those roads found in Estate Whim.

“The success of the territory’s street addressing initiative is dependent on collaboration with communities, neighborhood organizations and folks like you,” George told the gathering.  George asked residents who use the unnamed roads on a regular basis or live in the areas to be a part of the naming process, according to the news release. He encouraged them to work with their neighbors to gain consensus on street names, noting that they should ideally reflect community history and interests.
