Prime Minister Holness announces by-election set for September 30

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced that a by-election for the North East St. Ann constituency will be held on September 30, 2024.

The announcement comes as the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) gears up its political machinery in anticipation of general elections, which are constitutionally due next year. Nomination day for candidates has been set for September 11.

During a post-cabinet media conference at Jamaica House earlier today, Prime Minister Holness also revealed that Matthew Samuda, a government senator and Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, has resigned from both his legislative and executive roles. This move is to facilitate Samuda’s nomination as the JLP’s candidate for North East St. Ann.

Samuda’s resignation follows the unexpected departure of Marsha Smith, the embattled Member of Parliament for North East St. Ann, who resigned on Monday with immediate effect. Samuda is expected to return to his ministerial duties if he successfully retains the seat for the JLP in the upcoming by-election.
