Virgin Islander Selene Laws has been making a difference behind the scenes as her work in health care administration has connected patients to critical mental health services in Los Angeles, Calif.
“The joy that I get from seeing the kids get services, seeing them progress from where they started from, and where they end up. That’s very satisfying — seeing the impact that it has on the youth,” Laws told The Daily News.
Laws, the daughter of the late Stanley and Hannah Laws, was born on the island of St. Kitts and relocated to St. Thomas at age 6. She was the youngest of six children, and her siblings include Henry and Samuel Laws, who reside on St. Thomas, and Ernest, Cathrine and Jeanne Laws, who live abroad. “They have all been my support and backbone throughout my journey,” Laws said.
She attended the Ulla F. Muller Elementary School, formerly Nisky Elementary, and later transferred to the St. Thomas-St. John Seventh-day Adventist School where she graduated in 1988. She earned her bachelor’s degree in finance management from the University of Southern Caribbean in Trinidad and went on to earn two master’s degrees, in business administration and in health administration.
