Tourism, Police Dept. preview UberSoca J’ouvert and after-party

ST. CROIX — Officials used a Government House briefing on Monday to preview the upcoming UberSoca Cruise J’ouvert and after-party, which are coming to Frederiksted on Thursday.

Two and a half thousand revelers left Miami on board the Norwegian Jade this week for the 10th anniversary of the “largest soca festival at sea.” Ian Turnbull, director of the Festivals Division at the Virgin Islands Tourism Department, said on Monday that the ship is expected to dock at the Frederiksted Pier at 7 a.m. A two-mile, zombie-themed J’ouvert through town will kick off at 9 a.m. and a “beach cool off” after-party will take place from 12 to 5 p.m. at the nearby beach.

“What you can expect is water, paint, powder and foam,” Turnbull said. The event will feature local artists including DJ Avalanche and Adam O. and local food vendors. Turnbull said vendors can sign up by calling the V.I. Police Department at 340-643-1351 for those interested in setting up along the J’ouvert route or 340-712-0068 for information about the beach party — though Turnbull noted that they may be at capacity.
