ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The [British] Virgin Islands, weakened by the absence of a few of its regular players due to red cards and injuries, battled hard against a determined Dominica but eventually fell to the visitors 1-2 in their CONCACAF Nations League match at A.O. Shirley Grounds today, November 16, 2023.
A win for the home side would have seen them top Group C of League C and promoted to League B next season.
Opportunities for VI
And the Virgin Islands had an opportunity to take the lead in the 10th minute when Tyler Forbes made a good run down the left flank and had a clear shot for goal but he was only able to find goalkeeper Glenson Prince with a soft shot.
Another opportunity came in the 34th minute when Luka E. Chalwell headed the ball just over the crossbar from a throw.
Dominica also had a chance in the 20th minute when one of its players took a shot from close range but hit the post.
Goals
The score was untroubled at half-time; however, Dominica silenced the home crowd when Audel Laville took advantage of some sloppy defending to find the back of the nets in the 52nd minute.
The home crowd came back alive in the 63rd minute when T´Sharne Gallimore dribbled a couple of defenders at the top of the box and fired the ball into the goal.
Celebrations were short-lived; however, as Dominica regained the lead five minutes later when Eustace Marshall put the ball past Daniel Gilford in the 63rd minute.
The VI boys would battle hard for an equalizer, with substitute Azarni Callwood especially causing trouble for the Dominicans; however, the visitors held firm to ensure the win and a return to League B next season.
The VI team was missing several players for the big game, including Skipper Troy Kavon Caesar and Carlos Septus, who were on suspension owing to their picking up red cards in previous games.
