BVIPA to build new cargo warehouse at Port Purcell in 2025

The BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) will construct a new general cargo facility at Port Purcell next year, according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Announcing the project during his recent budget address, Dr Wheatley said the new facility will significantly enhance the BVIPA’s cargo handling capacity and is part of broader efforts to upgrade the territory’s port infrastructure. In addition to the new cargo warehouse, planned improvements include repairs to the Cargo Dock Apron, ensuring the facility is equipped to handle future demands. Another planned improvement is the rehabilitation of the Road Town Jetty Dock and the Jost Van Dyke Ferry Dock, aimed at enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.

In recent years, the Ports Authority has been steadily moving towards improvements to enhance its operations. In 2019, the BVIPA advertised plans to expand Port Purcell to berth larger cargo vessels, including an extension of at least 700 feet east of the existing bulkhead. The BVIPA has also invested in Virgin Gorda, acquiring the Chateau beachfront property in 2020 for approximately $2 million. The acquisition was part of plans to expand the Virgin Gorda port facility by separating cargo and passenger operations.
